Changed by Grace: A Final Word on Change

Series: | 02.27.2011 by

As we wrap up our series entitled “Changed by Grace” and our case study of the Apostle Peter, who God radically transformed, we’re not surprised to find the topic of Peter’s final sermon/last will: how we change.

Changed by Grace: Overcoming Our Bias

Series: | 02.20.2011 by

Bias toward others because of skin color, ethnic background, social status, etc. is perhaps the most stubborn area of change. Yet, it’s God’s test case for the early church and in the life of Peter.

Changed by Grace: After the Fall

Series: | 02.06.2011 by

It’s not uncommon these days to hear or learn about the moral fall of a public figure. The media reports the details, the response of the spouse, perhaps an apology, and, sometimes ,we’re given a short back page follow up on the life of the fallen–one has reinvented himself, another lives life in the wings, another sinks further and further down.  But, what does life after the fall look like for Jesus’ followers?

Changed by Grace: Learning Love

Series: | 01.30.2011 by

The songs and poems of history are full of bold promises of love–of scaling mountains and crossing oceans.  However, our tests of love often come in much more subtle forms: loving through disappointment, putting others’ interests above our own, etc.  It is here we see the weakness of our love and it is in the weakness of our love that we begin to see the strength of God’s.

Public service, non-profits, volunteer, faith-based–Washington is a city of service.  And, most people would see service the mark of a successful life.  But what really makes for “successful” service?

Changed by Grace: Freedom From, Freedom In

Series: | 01.16.2011 by

Christ calls us to live in the world, but not of the world.  We have been freed from existing power structures through Christ’s mercy to us on the cross.  This frees us to live in the midst of these power structures and show mercy to others, especially the oppressed and marginalized.  We can put ourselves at a voluntary disadvantage and take great risks because we have a hope of a greater reward.

Changed by Grace: Living Ready

Series: | 01.10.2011 by

The second coming/return of Jesus Christ to earth is usually handled in one of three ways.  The first is to dismiss it as a far-fetched religious myth.  The second is to obsess over it.  The third is to file it down the list of important beliefs. However, Jesus teaches us that we will lack something essential without it.

Changed by Grace: In Light of Glory

Series: | 12.26.2010 by

There are some lights–a marvelous sunset, the great northern lights, the city lights of Paris or NYC–that can only be described as “glorious.”  The words “light” and “glory” often find themselves together, and so it is in the Bible.  God’s glory is seeing Him in true light.  On what is called the “Mount of Transfiguration” Jesus provides a visual of this glory and through it we come to learn of our own.
