The book of Judges covers the lowest point in Israel's spiritual life, but the book's closing chapters cover the lowest of the low. The violence and inhumanity we see in the book's closing chapters isn't rare—it all happens every day in our city and our world, and the fact that it is chronicled in the Bible shows us that God isn't aloof. As we look at what Israel's moral condition in the time of the judges can tell us about human dignity, cultural hospitality, emotional sensitivity and interpersonal mercy, we should be reminded of our need for God's kingship and grateful for the King he has provided.
