The message of the gospel challenges us to become part of a larger community and to be deliberate about showing God’s grace to the city around us. We believe that local churches are meant to be a tangible expression of God’s work in our world, and that it’s important for those who acknowledge Jesus to be engaged with the worship, people and mission of a local church. That’s why we encourage those who have been part of Grace Downtown and who affirm the Christian faith to consider church membership.
If you’re interested in becoming a member of Grace Downtown, we’re happy to help you determine whether or not it’s the right place for you. Whether this is your first time joining a church or you are transferring your membership from another congregation, the membership process is the same:
- Membership Seminar
If you would like to learn more about our church, you are welcome to attend the next Membership Seminar, where Grace DC pastors will lay out our church’s vision, values and beliefs. This seminar is required if you plan on pursuing formal membership in our church, and is also a great forum for asking any questions you may have about the Christian faith or about Grace Downtown.
- Membership Questionnaire
After the seminar, if you are interesting in pursuing membership you will fill out a membership questionnaire, answering the Five Questions for Membership.
- Elder Interviews
You will then be scheduled for an interview with one of Grace DC’s pastors or elders. (Married couples will be interviewed together.) This will be a time for our pastors/elders to get to know you, learn a little about your experience of the gospel and to hear about your desire to join Grace DC. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any remaining questions you might have about the church.
- Reception at Worship
Once you’re approved for membership by Grace Downtown’s pastors and ruling elders, you will be received formally during a Sunday worship service. Formal reception simply involves taking your membership vows (that is, affirming the Five Questions). If you have not yet been baptized in a Christian church, you will also be baptized following your membership vows.
