The Gift of Marriage

On Friday, February 10, and Saturday, February 11, Grace Downtown counselor Dr. Jackie Griffith and her husband, Dr. Howard Griffith, will discuss the biblical view of marriage and the ways in which husbands and wives can forge stronger lives together. The seminar is being held at Wallace Presbyterian Church in College Park, MD. Couples and singles welcome. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to info@wallacepca.org. Our guest speakers will be Dr. Howard Griffith and his wife Dr. Jackie Griffith. Howard Griffith is the Associate Professor of Systematic Theology and the Academic Dean of Westminster Theological Seminary’s Washington, D.C., campus. He served as pastor of All Saints Reformed Presbyterian Church in Richmond for 23 years and has taught Systematic Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary since 2002. Warm-hearted and committed to the church, Howard is a gifted theologian, bringing redemptive historical biblical exegesis to bear upon the church’s theology. He is a graduate of Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary (MDiv) and Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia (Ph.D).

Jackie Griffith is a graduate of the University of Maryland (B.A.) and the University of Pittsburgh (M.Ed., Ph.D.). She does individual counseling through Grace D.C. (PCA) with men and women experiencing various psychological struggles, relationship struggles and the need for spiritual guidance. She also does couples therapy. She was on the teaching staff of Ligonier Ministries and has taught Marriage Counseling at several seminaries.

The Griffiths have been married for 31 years and have raised five children together. They frequently lead marriage workshops.

At coffee hour this past week, we held our annual Ministry Team Fair, giving members, regular attendees and visitors the opportunity to speak with volunteers from the Ministry Teams shaping Grace Downtown’s service to Washington, DC. However, between the Krispy Kreme donuts and the oreo-stuffed chocolate chip cookies, we understand if you didn’t make it around the room to the booths. Grace Downtown Ski Trip

Enjoy Skiing? The Grace Downtown Social Events Team is organizing a trip to Wintergreen, VA on Saturday, February 11. We’ll leave early Saturday morning and get back late Saturday night. Lift tickets are $56 and equipment rental is $31 per day. They’ll be organizing a carpool, so don’t let transportation keep you away. Contact Phil for further details or sign up (and pay) online. Winter Term 2012: The Doctrine of Man

The Bible tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. During Winter Term, we take time to understand the implications of Christianity’s claims and develop more fully the concepts we regularly encounter, knowing that the more we understand the gospel, the more deeply it will transform our lives.

This year, we are excited to present five Winter Term courses that will help us come to a fuller understanding of man, deepening our love for God and equipping us to better love and serve our city in the process. To allow you to take full advantage of this season of concentrated growth, Community Groups will be on hiatus for the month of January. You are welcome to attend as many classes as you’d like, and are strongly encouraged to attend all three sessions of each class you attend.

Over 300 people came together for the first week of Winter Term classes. Contact Johanna for information on joining the second and third weeks of any of these classes.

Twice a month, Sunday Service attendees gather over a meal at a local restaurant and get to know one another (and our city) a little better. These meals are coordinated by our Eat & Meet Team, and they are looking for more people to join the rotation. Interested in facilitating one of these dinners? Lending Library

We’re delighted to offer a Lending Library, available for browsing and checking out at Coffee Hours every second and fourth Sunday. You can return books any Sunday at the library cart or Info Table. To be a part of the library team, email Harry Moedinger.

Full descriptions of the books we have available can be found under Recommended Reading.

Library Guidelines
· Individuals twelve (12) years of age and older may borrow books.
· One (1) book may be borrowed at a time.
· Books may only be checked out during the semi-monthly “coffee hours” after church.
· Books must be returned within six (6) weeks. A $1 per week donation is requested when books are returned late.
· Books may be returned to either the Info Table outside the sanctuary, or directly to the person manning the Library Cart in Woodward Hall during Coffee Hour.
· Please handle books with care (i.e. do not write in books, fold the corners of pages, etc).
· All library users must provide up-to-date contact information and agree to abide by the rules of the library.
· Library users who lose or severely damage a book will be charged the replacement cost.
· The borrowing privileges of any library user may be revoked by the church librarian, Harry Moedinger.
